1. The oversized blazer that swallows your shoulders
Oversized tailoring is still everywhere, but shoulder seams sitting three inches past your own look sloppy instead of relaxed. Taking in the shoulder is the priciest common alteration, so only do it on a blazer with good fabric and construction. If the shoulders fit and the body is just roomy, that is the version to buy.
2. Wide-leg trousers that pool at the shoe
Wide legs rank high on longevity, but pooling fabric ruins the line and picks up every wet sidewalk. Hemming is cheap and fast, and it is the single alteration with the best return on investment this season. Ask for a slight break rather than a full break so they still work with flats and boots.
